Update of 29 May 2020:
The 2020 International Cancer Education Conference (ICEC) Executive Planning Committee has been discussing the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the October event for months. The Committee members are aware of - and have experienced - the same work disruptions and concerns that others in the cancer education community have expressed. Our community members have found their classes shifted suddenly to an online format; their research, clinical, training and outreach programs interrupted; and their funding threatened. Workloads have increased even as resources have diminished. On top of challenges in our work, many of us have become care providers and community workers in a personal capacity. And with our understanding of public health and epidemiology, we understand that this pandemic is not over and is not likely to be over for some time.
With that knowledge, the ICEC Executive Planning Committee announced in early April that we would be extending the abstract submission deadline by more than two months to allow our community members more time to develop their abstract submissions, particularly time after the end of the academic spring semester. And now, after discussions and careful negotiations with the planned venue in College Park, MD, and our event cancellation insurance provider, we have made the decision to convert the 2020 ICEC to an online-only event.
Planning is underway to make this event as accessible and engaging as possible. To start, we have extended the event dates to a full week, 12-16 October 2020, rather than just three days. We are confirming the willingness of our plenary speakers to present virtually, and we are working on developing a manageable schedule of education and social opportunities during the week. We are working on updating our sponsor packages to provide virtual opportunities to sponsors in place of the in-person sponsorship opportunities that we initially planned for. And we are planning to provide all of this at a discounted registration rate in recognition of the financial hardships some members of our community may be facing.
We will announce specific details for the virtual event as we finalize them. In the meantime, we encourage you to submit your abstracts for this virtual program. If your organization is considering sponsoring the program or exhibiting this year, contact us to let us know what sponsorship opportunities or virtual exhibit features you would like to see. And if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time.
We will miss seeing our colleagues in-person, but we look forward to meeting with you virtually in October. And hopefully we will once again be able to gather together in 2021.
